Karen Shepanski is a lesson in ambition. While mothering three children (she now has four), she worked her way up the ladder of success at IBM. Shepanski’s husband nominated her as Mom of the Week for her juggling of a full-time work load and full-time Mommy duties.
Through a temp agency, Shepanski began doing secretarial work at IBM a decade ago. Shepanski was eventually hired full-time, and moved from clerical work to the company’s help desk. She continued to climb the corporate ladder, and is now a project manager, handling several accounts needing special focus. She does all of her work at home, and with four children, that involves a bit of ingenuity.
“She makes things work,” says Shepanski’s husband, Steve. Karen Shepanski says the older children arrive home from school on the bus, and are able to play independently so she can get her work done. The 2-year-old goes to his aunt’s house during the work week.
Sometimes her work involves travel, and during those times, Shepanski makes all of the arrangements necessary to keep her family going in her absence. “I try to make sure Daddy knows the schedule for a couple of days. I make sure the meals are made, or planned.”
As for raising the children, Shepanski won’t take all the credit. “Steve and I work together as a team.”
