It could be just another day at the “office” for any of the 67 employees out of goFluent’s Endicott office who work part time from home, fine-tuning the English language skills of clients in such countries as Russia, Italy and France.
Many international companies want their workers abroad to improve their English fluency for everything from PowerPoint presentations to everyday business communications, said Ellen Benson, trainer and manager of goFluent’s local office.
The English language training is done over the phone and Internet, with workers earning a starting wage of $12 an hour, she said.
In fact, goFluent, which also has offices in the Kansas City, Mo., area and elsewhere in the world, seeks to expand its local work force by hiring another 20 people by the end of the month, Benson said. The company seeks native English speakers with an interest in other cultures and countries. Foreign language knowledge is not required but can be helpful.
“We have quite a few young mothers with children that sleep in the night. The mothers are able to do lessons then,” Benson said, noting the time zone difference between the United States and Europe, for instance.
Kenia Oliveras, 30, of Corning, is one of those moms. The stay-at-home mom has a 3-year-old and 2-year-old twins.
“This offers a really good way to build up more recent work experience,” said Oliveras, who was out of the work force for three years prior to joining goFluent. “The idea of talking to people overseas is different and interesting … and offers a fresh perspective on life over there.”
