A number of Valley women, while doing something ordinary with their children like diaper changing or baths, have come up with an idea for a product and manufactured it.

Because they often have college degrees and sometimes backgrounds in business, they have the confidence and knowledge to create their own companies. And thanks to the Internet, they can quickly find the resources they need to design, patent, manufacture and sell their products internationally.

“Who knows better than a mother what they need?” said Sandy Jablon, of Scottsdale, who helped her daughter Rachel Jablon Margalit, also of Scottsdale, create a cushioned Cuddle Sleeve to make it easier to hold a baby for long periods of time.

Other mom-created products created in recent years include the Cold Seat car seat cooler from Ahwatukee Foothills, Frog Pod bath tub scoop from Tempe, Kids Love Spanish DVDs from Mesa, Mark-My-Time digital bookmarks form Gilbert and Kiddie Creation children’s décor items from Chandler.

The newest product, a baby-changing table, comes from Sue Wong, a mechanical engineer trained at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who used to work at Motorola and Honeywell and now is a stay-home mother of two boys ages 3 and 6. She also has a master’s degree in Business Administration from Arizona State University.

Her mechanical engineering mind went into gear when she discovered how hard it is to change a squirming, shrieking baby’s diaper. You have to simultaneously hold the baby down, reach for a diaper, unfold it and reach for wipes.

So, she created a changing table that includes a diaper-storage area to enable a parent to quickly grab a diaper, attach the diaper to the table, lay the baby down and change the diaper. She created a table first out cardboard and discovered it cut changing time down to less than a minute.
