Get Born magazine is a labor of love for Heather Janssen.
Janssen, a former junior high English teacher who is now a stay-at-home mom of four daughters, wanted to create a magazine to share her experiences as a mom.
“I wanted a place where I felt it was safe to be uncompromising about my experience with motherhood and I thought other moms needed that, too,” she said. “I wanted a literary vehicle to wax philosophical or spiritual.”
Janssen, who lives in Loveland, believes moms need more than simple how-to information.
She and Katie Cassis, the magazines artistic director, jumped in without doing any research about the magazine business.
Janssen was confident she had enough material for a magazine and knew other women who also wanted to share their experiences. All writers contribute their stories to the magazine for free.
The first issue was published last fall, the second this spring and the third is available now.
For the first two issues, Janssen ended up paying the printing costs for the 500 copies. This summer’s issue is the first time she didn’t have to do that. Eventually she hopes to not only cover the printing costs, but also to be able to pay writers and herself.
