Is it a work space for artists or a coffee bar with a gallery?

The Studio at Rush Creek in Maple Grove is both. A copper coffee bar extends from one wall and a gallery lines another, with displays of stained glass, painted gourds and jewelry.

“No one knows exactly what we do,” said Dave Highness, 49, who is a co-owner (and the father) of the family business.

The business has an array of activities because the interests of all four family members go in different directions — yet they wanted to work together.

Dad wanted a coffee bar. Mom (that would be Karen) preferred an art studio. And the kids? Kristy is interested in jewelrymaking and Jon promoted a graphic design center.

Together they’ve built a business model for a family that makes art and brews coffee together. The studio is open to novice and hobby artists who work on stained glass, sterling silver jewelry and painting for an hourly fee. Art classes are offered and design services are available.
