Cake Maker Featured In People Magazine

Cabot Star-Herald:

All Sam Parsley wanted was a good-looking, good-tasking cake.

She got that, and more — the Cabot resident and professional cake-maker and her creations are featured in this week’s wedding issue of People magazine.

Parsley didn’t get there by the direct route. Back in the early 1990s she — “Sam” being the name her daddy gave her — was running a daycare in Sherwood. She’d been buying cakes from a woman but wanted something different from a typical sheet cake. But when Parsley asked about it, her cake-maker said she couldn’t do it.

So Parsley started doing them herself.

“I wanted a cake that tasted good and looked good,” Parsley said. “I hear all the time that good looking cakes don’t taste good. Well, mine do.”

Having decided to get out of the daycare business — she loved the kids but the “parents were a pain,” she explained — Parsley started Cakes By Sam in her home in 1995. Now that business has five employees and is looking for a 40,000-square-foot building to move into as Parsley expects her business to triple. The recognition in People as Arkansas’ best wedding cake maker is just one more accolade for the entrepreneur.
