Eleven years of personal experience was all it took for Loretta Boutin to know she wanted to open an indoor playground for kids. The 33-year-old mother of four opened Kiddin’ Around Play Gym in Rockland last month as a way to transform her stay-at-home-mom routine into a social environment for children and for herself. After searching for a year for the ideal location, the South Weymouth resident settled on a 2,000-square-foot warehouse formerly used by Bellew Tile and Marble.
Then she bought 58 gallons of paint and went to work converting the rented building into a colorful playground.
She enlisted the help of her husband and father, who built benches and cubby holes in which kids can store their shoes and coats.
Drawing from her experience with her own kids, Boutin equipped the gym with a giant checkerboard mat, slides, tunnels and a playhouse. Homemade chalkboards and flannel boards line the walls, and coloring materials cover a table in the craft corner.
