After years of selling real estate, Shari Walters understands what it means to have particular tastes. It wasn’t until she became a mom three years ago that the point was really driven home.“I have a 3-year-old, Kennedy, and I like to dress her sometimes very, very sweet - dripping in lace and flowers,” said Walters, 39, of West Des Moines. “The next day I would want her in camouflage and leopard print. I couldn’t find a venue here where I could find that.”
The solution? Walters opened her own store, where lace and flowers are sold, along with the bright colors and leopard print.
But Walters’ story isn’t just that of another female business owner. Like millions of other women, it took becoming a mother for her to realize the need for businesses catering to moms, dads and their kids.
“I just thought there was a niche in this market that wasn’t being fulfilled,” Walters said of the Des Moines area. “It wasn’t family-friendly. Every single decision I made in relation to the store was with family in mind, especially Kennedy.”
